Show To Fix Starter Motor

Once the new starter motor has been fitted the mounting bolts are then tightened to the specific torque required. Check the starter gear located on the side of the starter motor for signs of damage.

Connect the positive lead to the top terminal on the solenoid.

Show to fix starter motor. Set the multimeter on the lowest ohms setting and test the resistance of the coil of the solenoid. However the Bendix gear of an inertia-type starter can be repaired See Replacing the Bendix gear without stripping. Connect another positive lead to the small terminal on the solenoid the starter should fire up throwing the pinion out and spinning the motor.

Ditto between the battery negative post and the engine block. The starter motor is responsible for turning the engine over during ignition and allowing everything else to happen. To trace the fault and carry out repairs you will nearly always have to strip down the motor See Stripping the starter motor especially if the fault is in the commutator or brush gear.

Removing the motor from the car gives sufficient access. But on some car models the starter motor is located where the engine and the transmission should meet. The smaller cylindrical part affixed on top or on the side of the starter motor is the starter solenoid.

Worn or damaged gear teeth will prevent you from cranking the engine as well. Basically if you found the starter motor then you have found the starter solenoid. If its not receiving power then there is an issue with the wiring or circuit between the switch and battery.

It is possible for the starter motor to come loose and wobble when the gear rotates causing damage to the teeth on both the starter and flywheel gear. If the starter or flywheel gear teeth are worn or broken the damaged gear will need to be replaced. If the mounting bolts are tight remove the starter motor from the vehicle and check the pinion gear this is the small gear at the front of the starter that engages the flywheel to crank the engine.

Accept no more than a 05-volt voltage drop between the battery post and the starter hot post. The starter motor is a cylindrical metal component. Starters are bolted to the engine block or the transmission case.

No air means that fuel cant combust. The starter motor should do nothing it shouldnt spark or click. Once the battery is disconnected the wiring to the starter is disconnected.

If your engine isnt turning theres no air. Generally there are two bolts. Check the condition of the pinion gears teeth.

The starter motor wiring is then disconnected and the starter is then removed from its location where the engine and the transmission join. It requires a flow of air into the engine which can only be achieved by creating suction the engine does this when it turns over. On a few you can replace brushes with the motor in place through a hole in the side of the endplate.

If the starter is determined to be faulty the battery must be disconnected prior to commencing any work. Most starter motors have to be removed and partly dismantled See Stripping the starter motor to inspect or replace brushes. The solenoid also has an internal connection to switch the high amperage circuit.

However some have a removable band which lets you check at least two of the brushes with the motor in place.
